Hoori Noorani
Hoori Noorani is the proprietor of Maktaba-e-Danyal, a well-known publishing house based in Karachi. She inherited the business from her late father, Malik Noorani, following his passing. After completing her early education in Karachi, her passion for literature and linguistics drove her to pursue a master’s degree in philology, specializing in Russian and World literature, at the People’s Friendship University in Moscow. Upon her return to Karachi upon graduation in 1983, she briefly taught the Russian language at the Russian Cultural Centre before joining her father’s publishing enterprise. Maktaba-e-Danyal has gained acclaim for publishing works by celebrated authors such as Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi, Syed Sibte Hassan, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Iftikhar Arif, Fahmida Riaz, Habib Jalib, and many others. The publishing house has also introduced the writings of Indian authors to its catalogue. Presently, Maktaba-e-Danyal is actively engaged in translating works from world literature into Urdu and promoting Pakistani authors who write in English. Additionally, Ms Noorani is a trained classical dancer and has demonstrated her translation skills by translating Henrich Borovik’s renowned play, ‘Interview in Buenos Aires,’ from Russian into Urdu.
